We met Nima when she was 10, the day her father came looking for help. He feared for her and the heavily abusive environment she was facing at her previous boarding school. Nima hails from the remote Zanskar valley of Ladakh, which remains cut off from the rest of the world for 4-5 months of the year, due to the harsh winters. Her parents are herders and farmers. They had to send off Nima to Leh city for schooling and boarding when she was 5 years old. In 2015 there was breaking news in Leh that the school had been abusing for years. That’s when her father came to Amrita-Seattle seeking help. Nima transitioned into our residential facility and a brand new school and began to receive constant support, care, and love. Gradually, she showed us confidence, assuredness, and her great ability to make us all laugh! It's been 8 years now, and today Nima is thriving in high school as one of the 120 students of her entire grade, and aspires to become a veterinarian one day.
