Nisha’s story is one of transformation, hope, and unbreakable strength. Born in a remote village in Nepal, life wasn’t easy for Nisha and her family. Moving to Ladakh, they faced hardships, but with the support of Amrita-Seattle, Nisha found a home where dreams could flourish. 💜

Roots of Struggle: Nisha’s Early Years in Nepal

Nisha Tamang, affectionately known as Nishku, was born into the harsh realities of subsistence farming in a remote Himalayan village in Nepal. Born to parents tending to the challenges of subsistence farming, Nisha's early years were painted with the hues of struggle. The Tamang family's pursuit of a better life led them to move to India, leaving the familiar terrain of Nepal behind. They sought refuge in the Indian Himalayan expanse of Ladakh, lured by the promise of employment that construction, brick making, and roadwork held.

New Challenges: A Life of Hardship in Ladakh

The Tamang family’s new home in Ladakh, nestled in the Indian Himalayas, with even more difficulties.  The family, like many others, engaged in arduous labor for meager wages, navigating the unforgiving terrain and climatic adversities. The family worked tirelessly in tough conditions for little reward, and Nisha’s mother, Reshma, worried deeply about her daughter’s future. In a community where labor is a way of life, children often find themselves at the mercy of exploitation and neglect. Education and basic needs seemed out of reach.

Amid these challenges, Reshma discovered Amrita-Seattle, which provided a safe haven for at-risk children. Nisha, now enrolled in the Home of the Snow Lion, blossomed in an environment of care and learning. At Amrita-Seattle, she was enrolled in Lamdon Model Sr. Sec School, where her natural curiosity and enthusiasm flourished. This transformation in Nisha sparked a new sense of hope for her family.

Nisha emerged as a beacon of hope. A healthy and bright child, she radiated energy and curiosity, eager to explore the world and absorb its lessons.

A Mother’s Rebirth: Reshma’s Journey to Education

Nisha's growth and exuberance inspired a remarkable turn of events.

Inspired by Nisha’s energy and love for learning, Reshma was moved to pursue her own dreams of education. As a teenage mother, she had abandoned her studies after the 7th grade. However, seeing her daughter’s growth, Reshma found the

strength to return to school. With the support of Amrita’s educators, she worked
