Menstruation, a natural phenomenon, poses significant challenges for women in rural India due to various socio-economic factors. Access to menstrual products, stigma, and lack of education are among the key hurdles faced by these women.
Key Challenges
Limited Access to Menstrual Products: In rural areas, women often struggle to access affordable and hygienic menstrual products, resorting to makeshift solutions that compromise their health and well-being.
Stigma and Cultural Taboos: Deep-rooted cultural taboos surrounding menstruation perpetuate stigma and shame, inhibiting open discussions and access to necessary resources and support.
Lack of Education and Awareness: Many women and girls in rural communities lack adequate knowledge about menstrual hygiene, leading to health risks and perpetuating myths and misconceptions.
Amrita-Seattle's Initiative
In 2023, Amrita Seattle took a proactive step by organizing an impactful initiative focused on addressing menstrual health challenges in rural India. In our inaugural conference in New Delhi, we brought together experts, stakeholders from seven Delhi-based NGOs to discuss and devise strategies for improving menstrual health and hygiene management.
By fostering collaboration and sharing innovative approaches, we hope to ensure the availability of menstrual products and effective waste management in even the most remote areas of India through out the year. Such initiatives are crucial steps towards menstrual equity and dignity for all women and girls in rural communities.
